Avient Masterbatch & TPE: What a Quality Inspector Wishes You Knew Before Specifying

Avient isn't just another plastic supplier. But here's what most spec sheets won't tell you.

Lower-cost masterbatch suppliers will meet your specs at a noticeably lower price point.

The bigger picture: Is polyurethane plastic?

Common question I hear: "Polyurethane is plastic, right?" The answer is yes—polyurethane (PU) is a polymer, which puts it in the broader plastic family. But it behaves very differently from thermoplastics like PP or PE. PU is typically thermoset (cross-linked, not re-meltable) unless specifically formulated as a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Avient's portfolio includes TPU options, which can be processed on standard injection molding and extrusion equipment. If you're considering replacing a rigid plastic with a flexible elastomer for a specific application (like overmolding for vibration damping), it's worth a conversation with their technical team.

Practical advice for specifying Avient materials

Based on what I've learned—sometimes the hard way—here's what I'd suggest:

  • Get a written spec agreement before the first order. Including acceptable ΔE ranges, tensile strength minimums, and adhesion test methods. Don't rely on verbal assurances.

  • Know your true cost. The premium for Avient masterbatch or TPE is often 10-25% over generic alternatives. The question isn't "is it cheaper?" It's "is the consistency worth the premium for this application?"

Avient is a solid choice for applications where material consistency, color accuracy, and regulatory compliance are non-negotiable. For commodity applications where those factors don't matter, lower-cost alternatives exist. Understanding which bucket your project falls into is the difference between a smart specification and an unnecessary expense.

Take this with a grain of salt: Every operation is different. Your tolerances, volumes, and quality standards might be different from ours. But this is what four years of reviewing specs and rejecting off-spec batches has taught me about where Avient fits in the real world.
