Avient Masterbatch vs. Generic Colorant: A Procurement Manager’s TCO Comparison
The Comparison That Doesn’t Look Like One
I run procurement for a 45-person specialty plastics company. Over the past seven years, I’ve managed a $900,000 annual materials budget, negotiated with more than 25 masterbatch suppliers, and logged every order in our cost system. This is the comparison I wish someone had shown me earlier: Avient masterbatch and Avient colorant systems versus generic colorants.
The standard way to compare them is price per pound. I’m going to do it differently: total cost, processability, and compliance. Because the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest purchase.
Before we get into that, let’s address a question that shows up more than it should: polycarbonate vs plastic. Polycarbonate is plastic. What people usually mean is “PC vs other plastics,” or “PC vs glass.” That distinction matters, because the plastic you choose affects what kind of colorant you need in the first place.
1. Cost: The Lowest Quote Wasn’t the Lowest Total
In Q3 2024, I collected quotes for a 5,000-pound order of black masterbatch for a TPO part. Three generic suppliers quoted between $1.90 and $2.15 per pound. Avient quoted $2.55 per pound. On paper, the generic supplier won by about 19%. That’s the kind of number that gets a procurement manager’s attention.
Then we ran the trial. One generic masterbatch needed a 5% let-down to hit the same color spec. The Avient material hit it at 3%. That meant 250 pounds of generic colorant instead of 150 pounds to make the same finished product. The generic’s per-pound price advantage disappeared. The total colorant cost actually favored Avient.
I’m not 100% sure those exact ratios hold for every product, but the pattern is consistent enough that our TCO spreadsheet now has a line for let-down ratio. The same spreadsheet caught a $450 rush fee from one generic supplier who couldn’t deliver in time. The “cheap” option ended up more expensive. Simple.
Our total cost of ownership formula includes base price, trial-run material, let-down ratio, line downtime, testing, regulatory documentation, and potential rework. The lowest quoted price often just means the real number is hidden somewhere else.
I only believed in TCO after ignoring it. In 2022, I bought a bargain masterbatch from a broker and saved $1,200 upfront. The color streaked in production. Between scrap, line downtime, and rework, the total came to $2,100. The plant manager still brings it up. (Ugh.)
Another time, I had two hours to approve a colorant for a tight order. Normally I’d request samples and compare three suppliers. No time. I went with Avient on the spec sheet alone. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the timeline. But with the customer waiting, I made the call with the information available. Better than explaining to management why a line sat idle.
2. Processability: Colorants Can Break the Weld
Colorant changes how plastic flows, cools, and welds. A fabricator we work with uses a thermoplastic welder to join colored PP parts. One batch of parts using a generic masterbatch produced weak weld lines because the pigment loading was too high. The joints looked fine until they were stressed. Then they cracked.
The weld doesn’t care about your price per pound. It cares about dispersion and carrier compatibility.
Plastic laminate is another example. If a colored core layer has a different melt flow than the adjacent substrate, the laminate can warp or delaminate. A generic colorant formulated for “general polyolefins” might not match the specific TPE or PP grade you’re running. Avient’s colorants are designed around a specific material family. That’s not a marketing phrase. It’s a processing variable.
The polycarbonate vs plastic confusion shows up here too. PC is plastic, but it’s sensitive. An incompatible colorant carrier can cause stress cracking in polycarbonate parts. The part may survive molding and crack later during machining or impact. A matched carrier avoids that. A $0.30 per pound difference in colorant is nothing compared to a field failure. Not a good place to save a dime.
3. Compliance: The Documentation Is Part of the Product
Commercial buyers often ignore compliance until a customer asks. We ship into regulated industries. REACH and RoHS declarations are part of every order we accept. If a supplier can’t provide full documentation quickly, the risk moves to us.
In one case, a generic supplier needed three weeks to deliver a full material declaration. Our customer gave us five days. We had to switch suppliers and pay an overnight charge. The “savings” from that generic purchase never made it to the bottom line.
Regulatory requirements like EU REACH (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006) and the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU) are worth checking against your own applications. I’m not a lawyer, and rules change. But you can be certain your upstream supplier will be asked for data. Get it in writing.
Avient also publishes a sustainability report with recycled content and carbon footprint data. That’s useful, but I won’t put it above TCO. It’s a tiebreaker, not a reason to overpay. The value of a guaranteed delivery date isn’t just speed. It’s certainty. And certainty is hard to see on a price list.
When to Choose Avient, and When Generic Is Fine
If you ask me, “Is Avient always better?” — no. For a simple black polypropylene crate with a loose color tolerance, a validated generic masterbatch can work. But “can work” is not the same as “will work.” You need to prove it.
- Choose Avient or a similarly matched supplier when: you’re processing polycarbonate, TPE, or a specialty blend; you need batch-to-batch consistency; you use a thermoplastic welder and need strong weld lines; you’re building a plastic laminate structure; or your customer expects compliance documents in days, not weeks.
- Choose generic when: you’re running a stable commodity resin, color tolerance is wide, you’ve tested the exact lot, and you have time to recover from surprises. Not because the generic is bad. Because I don’t buy performance I don’t need.
Here’s the thing: if you’re comparing masterbatches, you’re buying a production variable, not a pigment. The lowest quote can be the most expensive choice if it fails a weld test or delays a shipment. The higher quote can be a bargain if it keeps the line running and the documentation clean.
Set up your TCO spreadsheet before you set up the supplier meeting. Then you’ll know which one is actually cheaper. And if you’re still asking whether polycarbonate is plastic? You probably don’t need the advanced lecture. But you do need a supplier who can answer the question without making you feel like you asked something dumb.
