Avient TPE, Masterbatch, and the Acrylic vs Polycarbonate Trap

Every week, someone asks me: 'What plastic should I use?' I've learned to answer a different question first: Which material decision are you actually making? If you've ever ordered a plastic part and watched the first samples fail, you know that numb feeling.

Because there is no single answer. The right material for plastic sandals is a completely different problem from choosing acrylic plastic vs polycarbonate for a clear panel. And neither one is the same as picking an Avient masterbatch. Trying to solve all three in one email is how I burned through a serious chunk of my budget.

I'm a procurement and materials coordinator. I've been handling polymer and masterbatch orders for 8 years, and I've personally made 14 significant mistakes totaling roughly $62,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's material-selection checklist. If you can identify which scenario you're in, you'll save yourself some of that pain.

  • Soft or flexible parts: start with TPE/elastomer suppliers.
  • Clear or impact-resistant parts: compare acrylic and polycarbonate first.
  • Color or functional additives: choose masterbatch after the base resin is fixed.

Scenario 1: You need something soft, flexible, or grippy

If you're making plastic sandals, overmolded handles, gaskets, or anything that bends without breaking, your conversation starts with thermoplastic elastomers suppliers. Not with color. Not with price. With Shore hardness and adhesion.

Plastic sandals are a perfect example. The straps have to flex thousands of times without taking a permanent set. The sole might need to grab wet surfaces. If you choose a TPE with the wrong durometer, the part won't feel right in the first test. My first real disaster happened in 2017: I ordered a TPE based on a sample that felt perfect. The sample had been molded from an SEBS grade at Shore A 55. The production order was a different grade at Shore A 75. We didn't check the data sheet. The straps cracked after a week of field tests. Worse than expected. $3,200 order, zero salvage.

Here's the thing: thermoplastic elastomers suppliers are not interchangeable. Some focus on automotive, some on footwear, some on wire and cable. You don't buy 'Avient TPE' and hope the first pellet works. You work with an Avient TPE distributor and tell them your Shore A target, your substrate, and your regulatory requirements. If a distributor doesn't ask those questions, that's a red flag.

The technical anchor? Shore hardness is measured per ASTM D2240 or ISO 868. If you're overmolding onto PP, the TPE needs a formulation that chemically bonds to PP. If you need phthalate-free or food-contact compliance, say it before sampling, not after.

What I should have done in 2017: called an Avient TPE distributor and asked for a Shore hardness range, not a generic sample. Specs existed. I skipped them. Once.

Scenario 2: Acrylic plastic vs polycarbonate - when stronger isn't smarter

Acrylic plastic vs polycarbonate is one of the most common debates in my inbox. It's also one where people jump to 'polycarbonate is stronger, so it must be better.' That's a mistake.

Acrylic (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) both transmit light well, but they fail differently. According to published property data on MatWeb (accessed May 2025), acrylic's notched Izod impact value is typically around 0.3-0.5 ft-lb/in. Polycarbonate typically runs 12-16 ft-lb/in. That looks like a clear PC win. But impact strength is not the only variable.

Acrylic has better inherent UV stability and is easier to polish. Polycarbonate has higher impact strength but is softer, scratches more easily, and yellows under UV unless it's stabilized. If your part sits indoors and needs optical clarity, acrylic is usually the better choice. If it has to survive drops, impacts, or sharp edges, polycarbonate wins. If it has to do both outside, you need a UV-stabilized PC or a coextrusion. There is no 'tougher material' without trade-offs.

I once chose PC for an outdoor sign because it was 'stronger.' It yellowed in 18 months. The supplier who sold it didn't mention that standard PC yellows without UV stabilization. A specialist would have caught that. On that project, a sheet specialist told me 'this isn't my area, but go ask a PC compounder about UV stabilizers.' He lost a small order but earned my trust for everything after. That's what knowing your limits looks like.

For PC parts that need color or UV stabilization, Avient masterbatch can help. But the base resin decision comes first. Don't outsource the material decision to the color guy.

Scenario 3: The geometry is fine, but you need color or function

Once you've chosen the type of plastic, the next decision is color and additives. Masterbatch, also called color concentrate, is the most common way to do this. But masterbatch is not just pigment in a pellet.

Avient masterbatch systems are formulated to work with a specific carrier resin and processing condition. If you use a masterbatch made for PP in a nylon part, or a PE carrier in a clear PC part, you can end up with delamination, reduced mechanicals, or haze.

In September 2022, I approved a bright orange masterbatch for a nylon gear because the color chip matched. I didn't check the carrier resin. The chip looked right, but the carrier was a low-melt PE. The first production lot had voids and a 40% drop in tensile strength. The mistake cost $890 in redo plus a 1-week delay. It also made me look stupid in front of the plant manager (not that I needed the extra pressure).

Had two hours to pick a masterbatch once because the molding line was waiting. Normally I'd run a trial chip first. There was no time. I went with a color code we 'always used.' It wasn't the same formulation. The parts looked fine under the shop light. In sunlight, they were a different shade. The surprise wasn't the shade difference. It was how much money I spent to learn something a data sheet would have told me. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the timeline. But with the schedule already late, I made the call with incomplete information. That's exactly how expensive lessons start.

Everyone told me to write down the base resin family before choosing the masterbatch. I only believed it after ignoring it and watching a $2,300 batch of overmolded grips become brittle because the carrier resin didn't like the TPE. Now that rule is written on the whiteboard.

Looking back, I should have asked for the masterbatch technical data sheet before approving any order. At the time, I thought color was color. It isn't. Not even with a trusted name like Avient. The quality of the formula only matters if the carrier matches your base polymer.

Now I ask three questions before any masterbatch order: What is the base resin? What processing conditions? What regulatory or end-use requirements? If you're buying through an Avient masterbatch distributor, they should ask those same questions. If they don't, find another one.

How to tell which scenario you're in

This might sound obvious, but I've gotten it wrong enough times that I wrote it down:

  1. Does the part bend, stretch, or grip in use? Start with thermoplastic elastomers suppliers. That's Scenario 1.
  2. Does the part need to be transparent or survive impacts? Choose acrylic or polycarbonate before you talk about color. That's Scenario 2.
  3. Does the base material already work and you just need color or a functional additive? That's Scenario 3: masterbatch.

If you're making something that is all three - flexible, transparent, and colored - then plan for extra work. You'll likely need two or three specialists, not one generalist. And if a supplier claims they can do everything without asking one qualifying question, treat that as the same red flag I ignored in 2017.

The vendor who said 'this isn't our strength - here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else.

There's something satisfying about finally having a checklist that catches these mistakes before they happen. After all the scrapped batches and rejected lots, the best part isn't just the money saved. It's watching a night shift run without a panic call.
