Avient vs. Standard PC: What I Learned the Hard Way About Specifying Materials for Thin Plastic Sheets & Extrusions

When I first started handling material orders for our manufacturing line, I assumed all clear, rigid plastics were basically the same. I’d look at a spec sheet for a thin plastic sheet or a complex thermoplastic extrusion, see "polycarbonate equivalent," and think, "Good enough."

I was wrong. Let me tell you about the $3,200 mistake that changed that.

We needed a run of clear, thin-walled thermoplastic extrusions for a medical device enclosure. I specified a standard, off-the-shelf polycarbonate (PC). It met the light transmission specs. It was cheap. But it failed spectacularly in chemical resistance testing—the isopropyl alcohol wipe we use for sterilization crazed the entire surface. 150 units, straight to the trash.

That’s when I learned the difference isn't just about the raw material. It’s about the application-specific engineering. Now, I maintain our team's pre-check list. Here's the comparison framework I use, based on that nightmare and about a dozen smaller incidents since.

The Core Question: Why Compare Avient and Standard PC?

You’re likely dealing with a choice between a specialist material supplier like Avient (often through an avient official website search or a local distributor) and a standard, commodity-grade polycarbonate from a general plastics supplier. The decision isn't about which is "better." It's about which is better for your specific part.

We're comparing three critical dimensions that I've personally screwed up: Optical Clarity & Hardness, Chemical Resistance & Toughness, and Sustainability & Processability.

Dimension 1: Optical Clarity & Surface Hardness

This is where I made my first assumption. Both materials look clear.

The Standard PC: Standard PC is optically excellent. It has a high refractive index and great light transmission (around 88-90%). But its surface is relatively soft. It scratches easily. In our case, the thin extrusion walls had micro-scratches from the handling equipment that were invisible until backlit during inspection.

The Avient Solution (e.g., specialty copolyester or TPE-hard coated): This is where Avient’s portfolio shines. They don't just sell a resin; they engineer a surface. For a recent project with a thin plastic sheet for a touch screen overlay, we used an Avient material (a specific avient colorant and base resin blend) that had a much harder, more scratch-resistant surface than standard PC. It didn't have the same raw light transmission (about 84%), but the clarity after processing was far superior because it resisted surface damage.

The Hard-Learned Conclusion: If your part will be handled, wiped, or exposed to friction, the specialist Avient material wins. Don't just compare lab-spec light transmission. Compare processed clarity after handling. Standard PC is fine for an enclosed, untouched lens. It’s terrible for a frequently handled component.

Dimension 2: Chemical Resistance & Impact Toughness

I ignored this dimension once. Never again.

The Standard PC: Standard polycarbonate has outstanding impact resistance. It’s tough. But it has a fatal flaw: it’s highly susceptible to stress cracking from chemicals like isopropyl alcohol, oils, and even some cleaning agents. That’s what killed our 150 parts. The combination of internal stress from the extrusion process + the alcohol = cracked surface.

The Avient Solution: Many of Avient's specialty engineering plastics (like their proprietary TPEs or modified polyesters) offer significantly better chemical resistance. We’ve used an Avient material (sourced through their avient colorant line for color matching) in a pump housing that is constantly exposed to dilute bleach. Standard PC would last a week. This material has been running for two years (as of May 2024) with zero issues.

The Hard-Learned Conclusion: If your part will see any chemical contact (cleaning, sanitizing, environmental exposure), standard PC is a landmine. The Avient specialist material is worth the premium. This was the single most expensive lesson I learned.

Dimension 3: Sustainability & Processability

This is the dimension where the old rules change. (What was best practice in 2020 about PC recyclability may not apply in 2024.)

The Standard PC: Standard PC can be recycled, but the recycled content often degrades optical and impact properties. It’s also notoriously difficult to process into very thin walls without internal stress. The drying requirements are strict. It's a finicky material.

The Avient Solution: Avient has a massive focus on sustainability-focused solutions. They offer materials with certified recycled content that maintain performance. For a recent extrusion of thin plastic sheets for a retail display, we used an Avient grade with post-industrial recycled content. It processed more easily than standard PC, with fewer rejects, and we could legitimately market it as sustainable.

Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims like 'recyclable' must be substantiated. A product claimed as 'recyclable' should be recyclable in areas where at least 60% of consumers have access. This is a legal requirement we must verify.

The Hard-Learned Conclusion: For a virgin, one-off part, standard PC is fine. For a high-volume, thin-wall extrusion with a sustainability goal, the Avient material is almost always the better choice, both for processability and for the marketing story.

So, When Do You Pick Which?

I can't tell you one is always better. But I can tell you how I decide now.

Pick Standard PC when:

  • The part is thick (over 3mm).
  • It will never touch a chemical.
  • It is enclosed and not handled.
  • Cost is the absolute #1 priority.
  • Lead time is critical (standard PC is everywhere).

Pick Avient (specialty material) when:

  • The part is a thin-walled extrusion or sheet.
  • It will be handled, wiped, or cleaned.
  • You need specific chemical resistance.
  • You have a sustainability or color-matching requirement (avient colorant expertise is real).
  • The failure of a part would be expensive or dangerous.

That $3,200 mistake taught me that the material spec is rarely the place to save a nickel. I used to think all plastics were commodities. Now I know that the right engineering—even for a thin plastic sheet—is the difference between a product that works and a pile of scrap.

Save yourself the headache I had. Check your chemical exposure. Check your handling environment. Then make the call.
