How to Choose an Avient TPE Distributor: A 7-Step Checklist I Use on Every Order

I've been handling TPE orders for eight years. I've personally made and documented seven significant mistakes, totaling roughly $46,000 in wasted budget. This checklist is the one I wish someone had given me in 2017.

If your job involves buying thermoplastic elastomers—or if you're comparing TPE against other elastomers for a new part—this checklist is for you. It's not a material science lecture. It's seven specific steps to run before you commit money to an Avient TPE distributor or any other supplier.

Everything I'd read about buying TPE said to compare three quotes and choose the cheapest. My experience with more than 200 orders suggests otherwise. Relationship consistency often beats marginal price savings. That's one of the lessons this checklist is built on.

1. Understand what you're buying: thermoplastic vs elastomer

Before you contact a distributor, make sure you're comparing the right material family. I know this sounds kinda basic. I lost an order over it.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are materials that behave like rubber at room temperature but melt and flow when heated. That's why they can be injection molded and, in many cases, reground and reprocessed in-house. Thermoset elastomers—think classic vulcanized rubber—cure through a chemical cross-linking reaction. Once cured, they don't melt.

Here's the one-sentence version: TPEs process like plastics but feel like rubber; thermoset elastomers stay rubber and go in the trash if you try to remelt them.

In everyday sourcing, the phrase 'thermoplastic vs elastomer' is a false comparison. The real decision is usually TPE vs thermoset rubber. For a practical thermoplastic vs elastomer comparison, look at heat resistance, chemical resistance, and compression set. TPEs often win on processing efficiency; thermosets often win on high-temperature performance.

2. Verify the distributor's Avient authorization—and the Avient logo

Not every website that uses the Avient logo is an authorized Avient TPE distributor. I once accepted a quote from a reseller who had the logo in their email signature. The material was not what I expected. The 'Avient logo' was just a brand symbol on a repackaged generic TPE.

I went back and forth between an established Avient distributor and a lower-priced reseller for two weeks. Established offered reliability. The reseller offered a 16% savings. Ultimately I chose reliability, and I'm glad I did. The reseller's price suddenly disappeared after I asked for a certificate of analysis.

What to do now: ask for evidence that the distributor has a current agreement to sell Avient products. If the quote lists an Avient brand like Versaflex, Dynaflex, or OnFlex, check the product datasheet number. Then call the distributor and ask for the original certificate of analysis. If they hesitate, that's a red flag.

3. Match the TPE grade to your real application conditions

TPE is not one material. It's a family that includes styrenic block copolymers, thermoplastic polyurethanes, thermoplastic vulcanizates, and copolyesters. A grade that works for a soft-touch handle can fail as a gasket.

Check these specs before you fall in love with a price:

  • Hardness (Shore A or Shore D, measured per ASTM D2240)
  • Compression set at the temperature your part will see
  • Flex fatigue resistance if the part bends repeatedly
  • Weathering and UV resistance
  • Chemical contact with oils, cleaners, or solvents

That last one is the one I skipped in 2022. The material looked perfect on paper. It deformed after two weeks of contact with a mild solvent. $3,200 order, straight to the scrap bin.

4. Ask for thermoplastic elastomer safety and compliance data before sampling

Most of the confusion around thermoplastic elastomer safety comes from treating TPE as a single chemistry. It isn't. The safety profile depends on the formulation, additives, and the application.

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is required by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, but it is not enough. It tells you the hazard classification, not whether a material is suitable for food contact, skin contact, or a medical device. In one plastic mask project, the TPE strap looked fine on paper. We had to re-submit because the customer required ISO 10993-10 skin sensitization data. That added three weeks.

If you don't know what data you need, ask the distributor these three questions:

  1. Is this grade listed as compliant with FDA food-contact regulations or EU 10/2011?
  2. Do you have ISO 10993 biocompatibility data for skin-contact devices?
  3. Does the product contain latex?

Don't assume 'TPE is safe.' You have to verify for your specific end-use.

5. Run a small batch trial under production conditions

This is the step most people skip. I get why. You're under pressure, the distributor says the material is a drop-in replacement, and you want to save time. In my first year, I skipped it because the delivery schedule was tight. The material worked in a lab mold but failed in the actual production mold. I wasted 20 hours of press time, and the production manager stopped talking to me for a week (mental note: never trust 'it'll be fine' from a sales rep).

A small trial doesn't have to be huge. Run a single cavity or a short production run with:

  • the same mold temperature range
  • the same cycle time
  • the same drying conditions
  • the same downstream operations

If the supplier says 'just run it,' run a trial anyway. It's cheaper than a full order failure.

6. Lock down the spec and the change notification process

TPE suppliers change formulations. They also change suppliers of raw materials. If the distributor doesn't tell you, you might not notice until your parts start failing.

Set up a written change-notification requirement. I use a simple digital spec sheet that includes the exact grade, datasheet version, colorant, and additives. If the distributor wants to change anything, they have to notify me before shipping, not after.

Switching to this digital process cut our quote-to-order errors significantly. It also reduced material-spec disputes. Last year, we caught 16 potential issues before they became production problems. The old phone-call-and-hope system missed most of them. I still use phone calls for urgent issues, but the digital checklist is the source of truth.

7. Keep a lot-level sample archive

This is another step that sounds unnecessary until you need it. When a batch of parts fails in the field, you need to know exactly which lot of TPE was used. The lot number on the certificate of analysis should match the material in your storage area.

Here's what I do now: keep a small sample from each received lot in a labeled bag, with the date, PO number, distributor name, and lot number. It takes five minutes. It saves you from blaming the wrong supplier.

I'm not 100% sure this is standard across the industry, but it's the reason we survived an audit in 2024 without a shutdown.

Common mistakes I still see on TPE orders

Three things go wrong more often than they should:

  • Using Shore hardness as the only spec. Two materials with the same Shore A can have completely different compression set, chemical resistance, and processing behavior.
  • Assuming TPE is 'universally recyclable.' Some TPEs can be reground and reprocessed in-house; many can't. Ask for yield loss data from the distributor.
  • Treating a plastic mask or other consumer product as a medical device without proper documentation. If the customer says 'medical grade,' ask them to define it in writing.

One more thing: don't assume the most expensive option is always the safest. From the outside, a premium price looks like a quality guarantee. The reality is that a mid-price, well-documented Avient TPE grade with the right compliance data can outperform a premium brand with the wrong formulation.

That's the checklist. Seven steps, plus two things I'd rather not admit: I caused most of my own problems, and the fix was boring. Check the material family. Verify the distributor. Run a small batch. Keep records. That covers most of the risk.
