I watched a prototyping project go sideways because the design specified ABS for a structural application that would have been better served by glass-filled nylon. The spec was technically met. The part still failed on the test bench. Not the supplier's fault—but the sourcing process wasn't asking the right questions, and that's on us.

A specialty materials company doesn't want to compete on that business, and you shouldn't want to pay engineering overhead for something that comes off a standard extrusion line.
But the reverse is equally true. When a project needs custom color-matched TPE with a specific durometer and chemical resistance, the local distributor can't help. That's when we turn to Avient. Avient plastics span a huge range of specialty compounds, thermoplastic elastomers, and colorants. Their TPE portfolio covers multiple chemistries, each with different compression set behavior, temperature performance, and bonding compatibility. If someone tells you "we've got TPE" and never asks what you're bonding to or what the service temperature is, they're not giving you the full picture.

Molecular weight, crystallinity, and internal stress in the rod all affect how it machines. A rod that works fine for a bushing can warp or crack when machined into a thin-wall part. A general-purpose grade can have enough internal stress to cause dimensional drift after the part sits for a few days. The material data sheet tells you these things—but only if you read it before ordering, not after the parts start failing.
To be fair, most of our PP rod orders have gone off without a hitch. The one that didn't was a batch from a supplier we'd never used before. They had a good price and fast delivery, but the material behaved differently on the CNC, and the machinist caught it before any finished parts were ruined. We sent it back and reordered from our usual source. That was the last time I sourced polypropylene rod on price alone. Lesson 4: Consolidating vendors saves time, but don't lose redundancy

This is aimed at the awkward middle: companies big enough to need consistent material supply, but not big enough to have a dedicated sourcing specialist. That's where I live, and it's a surprisingly underserved space.
I'll also confess something that's uncomfortable for someone in my position to say: material selection is real engineering work, and I'm not the person to recommend a specific polymer for a specific application. What I bring is purchasing experience—knowing how to verify claims, when to demand documentation, and which supplier relationships are worth building. For engineering guidance, lean on your supplier's technical support team. There's no universal "best plastic" and no universal "best supplier." Commodity distributors handle commodity materials. Specialty suppliers handle specialty challenges. That kind of candor saves everyone time, money, and a whole lot of frustration.
