The Cheapest Quote Is Usually the Most Expensive: What I Learned Sourcing Plastics for 5 Years
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I made the same mistake a lot of people make. I chased the lowest price. Five years later, I know that was wrong.
My opinion upfront: the cheapest quote is almost never the cheapest cost. This isn't a slogan. It's a lesson from managing around $150,000 in annual supply spending for a 200-person manufacturing company. I process 60-80 orders a year across maybe 8 vendors. Some years it's 50-60. How I learned to stop comparing unit prices
The first lesson came in 2021. A new vendor offered a great price on molded components—$0.18 cheaper per unit than our regular source. I ordered 10,000 units. The parts arrived two days late. More importantly, they were color-matched to a print sample rather than to the approved Pantone reference. The difference was subtle to me, but our production line rejected 12% of them. We paid for the returned inventory, the labor to inspect every part, and the rush fee to ship replacements from our regular supplier. That $1,800 saving turned into a $4,200 problem. If I remember correctly, the final number was even higher.
Here's the thing: the unit price is just the admission ticket. The real cost is what happens after the part arrives. Rejected shipments, disrupted production lines, engineering team hours spent troubleshooting a cheap material. That's where the money goes.
What value actually means when buying plastics
At some point, I started paying closer attention to the materials behind the parts. That's when I stopped thinking like a purchasing clerk and started thinking like the person who has to explain to operations why something failed.
Take thermoplastic elastomers, for example. There's a reason our engineering team asked me to narrow down the search to a specialized thermoplastic elastomer supplier. They didn't want the cheapest TPE. They wanted a supplier who could answer specific questions about thermoplastic silicone—like chemical resistance, durometer ranges, and overmolding adhesion. You can't judge a bottle by its resin
Another example: sourcing polypropylene plastic bottles. Everyone asks what's the price per bottle, but almost nobody asks about the resin spec, the wall thickness tolerance, or the label material. If you get the resin spec wrong, bottles can crack under stress or leach if they're holding certain chemicals. The cost difference between good polypropylene and off-spec polypropylene is small. The cost of a recall is not.
Is PTFE a plastic? And why it matters
One material I kept seeing in spec sheets was PTFE. If you've ever wondered, is PTFE a plastic—here's a simple answer: yes, it's a fluoropolymer plastic, but it's not the same as melt-flow thermoplastics like polypropylene. It behaves differently. It can't be injection-molded like a standard TPE. If a supplier treats PTFE as just another plastic, that's a red flag. It means they probably don't understand the manufacturing process, and that ignorance will eventually cost you.
Why does this matter for someone like me? Because when I'm buying, I'm not paying for material. I'm paying for performance. And performance depends on matching the right material class to the right application.
A color example that hurt
We had a run of custom parts that had to match a corporate blue across polypropylene bottles and molded handles. The supplier quoted a low price, but they didn't offer any color verification beyond a visual check. The generalist's quote was in the same ballpark until you added technical support. But we skipped that, and it hurt.

We ended up with a batch that was Delta E around 5 against the Pantone reference. It looked off to everyone, and it was all rejected. Had we asked the right questions upfront—about color tolerance, about material grade, about coating or label compatibility—the supposedly cheap option would have been way less attractive. That $200 cheaper quote became a $1,500 headache fast.
What about tight budgets?
I expect pushback: not everyone has the budget for premium suppliers. Real talk: I don't buy premium. I buy appropriate. There are times when a commodity material at the lowest price makes sense, and no one should apologize for that. Look, I'm not saying every purchase needs a specialty supplier. The problem is buying a critical material solely on price without looking at the total cost of getting it wrong. The question isn't can we afford the good supplier. It's can we afford the failure.
Bottom line: the cheapest material is only cheap if it works the first time. Take it from someone who has processed way too many invoices after a failed batch. This was true 10 years ago when material data sheets were hard to verify. Today, you can check a supplier's certifications and ask detailed questions on the first call. There's no excuse for guessing. Do the math on total cost, not unit price. That's the whole game. Period.
