Thermoplastic Material Selection Checklist: What to Verify Before Buying Avient Products

I manage purchasing for a 120-person manufacturer. I report to operations and finance, so my job is equal parts cost control and deadline management. My annual buy runs about $1.2 million across 15 vendors, which means a bad material decision shows up quickly.

Use this checklist when you're buying thermoplastic material for a new or existing part—especially if you're evaluating Avient products or comparing polycarbonate vs thermoplastic polyurethane. It won't replace an engineer's judgment, but it will help you avoid the most expensive mistakes.

Step 1: Define the operating conditions before you open a catalog

Look, I know it's tempting to start by searching “Avient” or “thermoplastic materials” and see what comes up. Don't. Start with the part itself.

I keep a one-page spec form that asks: What does the part touch? What temperature does it see? Does it need to flex repeatedly? Does it face chemicals, UV light, or impact? Is clarity important? The answer changes everything.

For example, polycarbonate vs thermoplastic polyurethane isn't a simple competition. Polycarbonate gives you optical clarity, stiffness, and impact resistance. TPU gives you flexibility, abrasion resistance, and tear strength. One is not better than the other—they're built for different jobs.

I went back and forth between PC and TPU for a week before I realized I was asking the wrong question. I kept comparing data sheets instead of asking what the part actually had to do. A rigid window? That's polycarbonate. A conveyor belt? That's TPU. Define the condition first, and half the material decision is already made.

Step 2: Read the data sheet like a buyer, not an engineer

At its core, material thermoplastic selection is about matching the property profile to your process and your end use. You don't need to memorize tensile strength values. You do need to know which values matter for your part.

For thermoplastic belts, pay attention to shore hardness, abrasion loss, flex fatigue, and coefficient of friction. For structural housings, look at impact strength, heat deflection temperature, and chemical resistance. The same material family can behave completely differently in different grades.

I've made the mistake of skimming a data sheet and assuming “polycarbonate” meant the same thing across all suppliers. It doesn't. Additives, fillers, and processing history change performance. If the grade number isn't on the sheet, it's not the same product.

One more thing: watch out for minimum values vs typical values. A typical value sounds nice, but if your part requires a minimum tensile strength, the actual grade might not meet it. Ask the supplier to confirm the lower bound, not just the point estimate.

Step 3: Verify product availability and the Avient products portfolio

When I first started ordering thermoplastics, I assumed a large supplier stocked every grade in their catalog. I was wrong. Avient products include a broad range of colorants, masterbatches, thermoplastic elastomers, and specialty engineered materials, but each grade has its own production schedule and minimum order.

Ask for the exact product grade, the technical data sheet, and the current lead time. If a supplier mentions a product they don't manufacture, ask for the original manufacturer's documentation. I once ordered “TPE” and received a product that was harder than expected because the grade wasn't specified. That's a communication problem, not a material problem.

Step 4: Check the Avient sustainability report—and read the footnotes

If your customers care about sustainability, the paperwork matters as much as price. During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I downloaded the Avient sustainability report to check their approach. It covers topics like recycled content, product stewardship, and emissions reduction.

From the outside, a sustainability report reads like a green promise. The reality is that a report is a disclosure, not a per-product guarantee. A supplier can have a strong sustainability strategy and still sell materials that aren't recyclable in every application. So ask the specific question: “Does this grade have recycled content? Is it recyclable in our region? What end-of-life options exist?”

Also, don't confuse “carbon footprint reduced” with “this product is eco-friendly.” The context matters. We rejected a “green” grade because it didn't have the required heat resistance, and the supplier had to suggest a different product with a different environmental profile.

Step 5: Build lead times and rush fees into your real cost

The cheapest quoted price is not the lowest total cost if you have to add rush fees, expedited freight, and overtime testing. I learned this in March 2024, when we needed custom thermoplastic belts and the standard lead time was six weeks.

We paid a 20% rush premium for guaranteed two-week delivery. Was it worth it? Yes. The alternative was missing a $15,000 customer deadline. In that situation, paying for certainty was the rational decision. A supplier that promises a date and charges extra for it is more transparent than one that gives you a vague window and hopes for the best.

Here's a rule I now use: if a project has a hard deadline, budget for the fastest reliable lead time, not the cheapest one. “Probably on time” is not a plan.

Step 6: Test a sample before you authorize a full production run

No data sheet, no sustainability report, and no sales presentation can replace physical sampling. I learned this the hard way.

I said “standard grade” to a supplier. They heard “lowest-cost grade.” Result: the parts arrived and failed a simple impact test. The material was technically within spec, but it wasn't the grade I had in mind. We had to reorder, and the reorder cost us two weeks and a very uncomfortable conversation with the VP.

Now I require samples for any new grade, and I test them under the same conditions the part will experience. For belts, that means running them on the actual equipment, not just pulling on a piece by hand. For enclosures, it means hitting them with the same cleaning agents and temperature cycles. A failed sample is cheap. A failed production run is not.

Common mistakes to avoid when buying thermoplastic materials

1. Don't choose a material based on a brand name alone. Avient makes high-quality products, but “Avient” isn't a material spec. You still need the grade number and application match.

2. Don't assume “sustainable” means “recyclable in your area.” Check the actual recycling codes and local processing availability.

3. Don't skip the compatibility test. A thermoplastic that works in a lab may fail in your mold, with your other components, or in your customer's environment.

4. Don't ignore the difference between a confirmed date and an estimated date. If a supplier says “around six weeks,” that's an estimate. Ask them to commit to a date and define what happens if they miss it.

5. Don't assume the polycarbonate vs thermoplastic polyurethane decision is a one-way door. Materials evolve, and so do suppliers. I re-review our material choices every 18 months, not just when something breaks.

This checklist won't make you a polymer engineer. But it will help you ask the right questions, read the right documents, and avoid the costs that come from guessing. Start with the application, verify the grade, read the sustainability report, and build in time for sampling. That's the closest thing I know to a safe thermoplastic order.
