Thermoplastic vs Thermosetting, Plastic Numbers, and One Expensive Glove Mistake

I’m the office administrator for a 300-person manufacturing plant. I manage all the non-production purchasing—roughly $400,000 a year across eight vendors. I report to both operations and finance. I am not a chemist. I became a reluctant expert in the language of plastics because the alternative was paying for my ignorance.

If you’ve ever searched for “thermoplastic gloves” or checked a container for a “polyethylene plastic number,” you know the feeling. You’re not trying to be a polymer scientist. You just want the right product at a fair price. The problem is that the words plastic, thermoplastic, and polymer are used as if they were one thing when they’re a whole family.

I don’t have hard data on how many buyers get confused by this. But after five years of orders, my sense is that specification ambiguity causes more returns and reorders than anyone wants to admit.

The Surface Problem: “Thermoplastic” Sounds Like One Thing

The first time I had to order a thermoplastic elastomer from Avient, I didn’t know it was a category. I called a local supplier and asked for “Avient thermoplastic elastomer.” The person said, “Which grade?” I had no answer. That call is when I realized I had been treating a product family as if it were a single product.

Around the same time, I was trying to make sense of recycling codes. When people search for “polyethylene plastic number,” they usually want to know whether a container can be recycled. The short answer is that #2 HDPE and #4 LDPE are both polyethylene. The longer answer is that the number doesn’t tell you enough to buy a material.

The Deeper Problem: The Vocabulary Is Doing Something Sneaky

Most of the confusion comes down to the thermoplastic vs thermosetting polymers question. It sounds like a heat-resistance debate. It isn’t.

A thermoplastic softens when heated and hardens when cooled. It can be remelted and reshaped. That makes it useful in injection molding, extrusion, and overmolding. A thermoset, on the other hand, cures through irreversible chemical crosslinking. Once it sets, you can’t melt it back down. Epoxies, vulcanized rubber, and certain high-heat coatings are often thermosets.

The “thermoplastic means it can’t take heat” thinking comes from an era when commodity plastics dominated the market. Today, specialty thermoplastics can be engineered for demanding conditions. That changed.

Neither type is universally better. A thermoset may give you permanent shape and chemical resistance. A thermoplastic may give you reprocessability and design flexibility. If you buy the wrong one for your process, you don’t just lose the material—you lose the production run.

Now about the “polyethylene plastic number.” The resin identification codes now standardized under ASTM D7611 were created to help recyclers sort plastic containers. They were not designed as material specifications. #2 HDPE and #4 LDPE are both polyethylene, but they behave differently in terms of stiffness, chemical resistance, and processing. And #1 PET, while it has “polyethylene” in its full name, is polyethylene terephthalate—a different polymer family from polyethylene. I almost ordered the wrong sheet stock because the two names looked close enough.

Under ASTM D7611, the code is an identification marker, not a performance guarantee. “#2” doesn’t tell you whether the material is UV-stabilized, food-contact approved, or suitable for a specific solvent.

Then there’s “thermoplastic gloves.” It sounds specific, but it’s one of the least specific search terms in PPE. Thermoplastic gloves can mean vinyl gloves made from PVC, TPE gloves, polyurethane-coated gloves, or a blend you’ve never heard of. Vinyl is thermoplastic. Nitrile is a rubber that is usually cured, so it ultimately behaves as a thermoset. If you just ask for “thermoplastic gloves,” you are going to get the cheapest thing the supplier wants to sell you, not necessarily the right thing for the task.

What Ambiguity Costs

In 2021, during a vendor consolidation project, I found “thermoplastic gloves” priced 15% below our usual brand. The description said “general industrial use.” I ordered 20,000. They were fine at a desk, but they cracked when the cleaning crew used them with a solvent spray. The vendor’s data sheet only claimed mild detergent resistance. I saved $240 on the initial order and then spent $1,480 on next-day replacement gloves. The old gloves went into a landfill. The finance team wasn’t happy. My VP asked why I didn’t read the fine print. A lesson learned the hard way.

The surprise wasn’t the price difference. It was how much hidden cost came from a word that seemed clear.

I don’t have hard data on industry-wide failure rates from terminology errors. But based on the three order mistakes I can trace to vague specs, my sense is that these errors cost at least five to eight times the original price difference.

And that’s the problem with comparing price first. The lowest quote is only cheap if the material actually does what you need. A $200 savings can become a $1,500 problem when the wrong polymer makes it to production.

What I Do Now: Start with the Polymer, Not the Price

The fix isn’t complicated, but it does require a little homework.

  1. Name the polymer family first. Don’t say “thermoplastic” alone. Say HDPE, LDPE, PP, TPE, or the proper family name. If you don’t know the family, say that and ask for help.
  2. Ask for the grade and a data sheet. “Avient thermoplastic elastomer” is not a part number. Avient’s portfolio spans thermoplastic elastomers, colorants, masterbatches, and specialty engineered plastics. The supplier should give you a grade designation and a technical data sheet. If they can’t, that’s a red flag.
  3. Use a distributor with technical support. If you’re looking for an Avient thermoplastic elastomer distributor, they should ask about hardness, processing method, color, and regulatory requirements before quoting. If they don’t, that’s a warning.
  4. Re-check thermoplastic vs thermosetting needs. If you need to remelt or rework, lean thermoplastic. If you need a cured, permanent shape, a thermoset might be right. No polymer family works for everything.

For “polyethylene plastic number” questions, treat the code as a clue, not a contract. For “thermoplastic gloves,” name the chemical exposure and physical demands before you name the material. To some extent, this is common sense—but it’s easy to skip when you’re in a hurry.

Useful references when you feel lost: ASTM D7611 for resin identification codes and ISO 1043-1 for polymer abbreviations. They don’t pick the material; they give you language to ask the supplier better questions.

I’d rather work with an Avient thermoplastic elastomer supplier that has technical support than one that only quotes prices. Avient makes the material; the right distributor knows which grade fits your application. The cheapest option is rarely the least expensive once you include failed batches, expedited shipping, and an annoyed operations manager. The real question isn’t “Which is cheaper?” It’s “Which polymer, which grade, and is it documented?” That’s where the value sits.
