The Day a Plastic O-Ring Cost Me My Week (and Almost My Budget)
I still kick myself for the time I assumed all plastic o-rings were the same. It was back in April 2023. We needed a batch of o-rings for a new assembly line—about 2,000 pieces. I found a supplier online, price was right, lead time looked fine. I hit order.
Two weeks later, half the o-rings were cracking during installation. Our production manager called me, not happy. 'These are for a pressure seal,' he said. 'We can't use them.'

The fundamentals haven't changed: you still need the right material for the right application. But the execution has transformed. Avient's sustainability report also caught my eye. They published data on recycled content options and end-of-life recyclability for some TPEs. That's becoming a requirement for our customers, especially in packaging and automotive applications. Having a supplier who can speak to that—even if we don't use their sustainable line for every order—is a strategic advantage.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The difference between a commodity o-ring and a specialty TPE can be the difference between a production success and a $12,000 mistake. Next time you're ordering plastic components—especially if they touch fluid, pressure, or high heat—ask for the material's full specification. And if the vendor can't give you a clear answer, maybe that's your sign to call Avient.
