Questions I'd Ask Before You Order TPE Material

Back in my first year handling material sourcing—2017, I think—I placed an order for 200,000 TPE caps. Maybe 200,000? I'd have to check the PO, but it was a lot. I specified a thermoplastic elastomer without checking the compression set. The parts failed within two months, and that mistake cost us roughly $3,800 plus a two-week delay.

Years later, I keep a checklist pinned to my desktop. I've shared it with every engineer and buyer I've trained. These are the questions that come up over and over, plus a few I wish I'd asked before I learned the hard way.

What exactly is an Avient thermoplastic elastomer supplier?

It sounds like marketing-speak, but the distinction matters. A thermoplastic elastomer supplier is a company that actually compounds or produces TPE materials, not just someone who resells them. Avient comes up often because they have one of the broadest specialty material portfolios in the industry. Their lineup includes TPEs, colorants, and masterbatches, which means they're not a one-trick pony.

When you search for “Avient thermoplastic elastomer supplier,” you're seeing a manufacturer, not a broker. That's important for sourcing because a manufacturer can answer the questions that matter: Can this grade hold up to oil? What's the compression set? Do you have a color match for this Pantone? I do not mean you should ignore resellers—they have their place. But for engineered parts, I'd rather talk to someone who makes the material.

Wait, Avient used to be PolyOne? And what about the Avient logo?

Yes. The company rebranded as Avient in 2020 after the masterbatch acquisition from Clariant. The Avient logo also changed. The current logo is cleaner than the old PolyOne wordmark, but you'll still see the old one on old data sheets and in some supplier portals, which confuses everyone.

If you're comparing an Avient grade to an older PolyOne grade, check the product number, not the logo. The material didn't magically change because the company changed its name. Same grade number, same formulation. That sounds obvious, but I've had a full batch order delayed because someone on the customer side kept insisting they'd never used Avient material.

What do I need to know about material thermoplastic elastomers?

Start with this: material thermoplastic elastomers are a family, not a single material. The family includes SBCs, TPOs, TPVs, TPUs, and copolyesters. They're all rubber-like, but they have different hardness ranges, temperature limits, chemical resistance, and processing behavior.

My early mistake was assuming “TPE” on a data sheet meant one thing. It doesn't. I once ordered 30,000 connectors—maybe 25,000, I don't remember exactly—with a TPE that looked perfect in the brochure. I didn't check the Shore hardness. The parts came out too stiff. We didn't have a formal approval process, so the issue wasn't caught until the customer received them. $2,100, straight to the trash.

So if someone asks you what TPE you need, don't say “the standard one.” Know the hardness, the flexibility, the temperature range, and how it will be processed. If you're not sure, ask for help before you order, not after.

What should I check when ordering elastomer o-rings?

For an elastomer o-ring, the rule is simple: match the material to the fluid, the temperature, and the compression. Miss one, and you'll get leaks.

I learned this on a $900 order of o-rings. I specified “TPE” because the design called for an elastomer o-ring, but I didn't tell the supplier what fluid it would touch. They delivered a standard TPE. The o-rings swelled and leaked as soon as they hit the solvent. I said “standard TPE,” they heard “normal stuff,” and we discovered the mismatch on the test bench.

Looking back, I should have sent the full application details and asked them to confirm compatibility in writing. At the time, I didn't know to ask.

Is plastic biodegradable? What about TPEs?

Short answer: most plastics are not biodegradable in any practical sense. Some bioplastics are compostable under industrial conditions, but that's not the same as being biodegradable in a landfill or the ocean. Conventional TPEs are not biodegradable. They can be recycled if a local recycler accepts them, but recyclability is a separate claim from biodegradability.

This is where a lot of sourcing confusion starts. Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims like “recyclable” have to be substantiated. If a supplier says something is recyclable, recycling facilities have to be accessible to a meaningful portion of consumers. “Biodegradable” claims are even more specific because they depend on time and environment. Honestly, I'm not sure why the industry doesn't just say “TPE is not biodegradable” more often. My best guess: it's easier to let people assume “based on plants” means “breaks down.” That's not helpful for material selection.

This was accurate as of early 2025. Standards and market claims change, so verify current documentation before you put a sustainability label on anything.

How do I avoid TPE sourcing mistakes?

The boring answer is a checklist. Every time. Mine has four boxes: confirm the grade and property set; name the application environment and chemicals; ask for a physical sample if the part is critical; document the approval in writing.

That checklist has caught 47 potential errors in the last 18 months—wrong grades, missing quantities, and environmental claims that would never hold up.

Digital tools help too. We cut our quoting turnaround from five days to two by sending detailed specs through a supplier portal instead of long email chains. Quicker isn't the point. Fewer chances for someone to interpret “sort of soft” differently than I meant is the point.

And if a price looks too good to be true, ask why. The lowest quote isn't the lowest total cost when you add delays, failed parts, and rushed reorders.
