Assuming that a thermoplastic elastomer compound is a commodity, like a bag of PE pellets, where the only real difference is price. Lesson 2: Thermoplastic vs thermosetting polymers isn't a 'real material' debate

The placemat problem made me rethink something broader. For a long time, I carried a bias: thermosetting polymers, like crosslinked rubber, felt more 'real' than thermoplastic elastomers. I told myself that thermoset rubber was stronger, more durable, more rubber-like. That belief comes from an era when early TPEs had high compression set and poor heat resistance. It was true back then. It isn't true across the board today.

According to ISO 18064, thermoplastic elastomers are broadly defined as polymer materials that have similar properties to vulcanized rubber but can be processed and reprocessed at elevated temperature. That reprocessability matters in production. Sprues, runners, and start-up scrap from TPEs can be ground and reused in controlled proportions. Thermosets, once crosslinked, cannot be flipped back into the hopper. They follow a one-way path.

Does that make TPEs better? No. It makes them different. Thermosets still win in high-temperature structural applications, certain chemical exposures, and places where creep and heat aging are critical. But for a food-contact plastic placemat, TPE was the right family. The problem wasn't TPE as a material. It was the specific compound selected, and the fact that we judged it by price alone.

Also, 'TPE' isn't a single thing. It's a family that includes styrenic block copolymers, TPOs, TPVs, TPUs, and more. The cheap material turned out to be a styrenic block copolymer with a low softening point. Fine for a stretchy toy, not ideal for a placemat that might sit in a sunny kitchen. I should have asked for the actual compound chemistry, not just the three letters.

After the disaster, we moved the placemat line to a qualified Avient thermoplastic elastomer distributor. It gets photographed for online reviews. It's touched by kids. It's a sensory experience: smell, feel, color, sound when you roll it up. That's not a commodity experience. That's a brand experience.

When we shipped the sticky placemats, the end customer didn't blame 'thermoplastic elastomer compound.' They blamed the brand on the box. Since we were the manufacturer behind that brand, they blamed us. The buyer told me later that the consumer complaints were sent to their executive team's group chat. That's how brand damage travels.

This is the point of the quality perception argument: what people feel when they touch your product becomes what they believe about your company. A slightly higher material cost is not just a supply chain line item. It's an investment in that belief.

But what if your budget is tight?

I can already hear the counterargument. 'Not every program can afford a premium thermoplastic elastomer compound.' Agreed. I'm not saying every product needs an Avient-branded material. If a part is hidden, painted, or structurally non-critical, a standard thermoplastic elastomer may be perfectly fine. The key is to evaluate the consequences of failure, not just the unit cost.
